Purposeful pairings, proven pedigrees
Every breeding decision at MKM starts with the horse we're trying to produce, not the stallion that's convenient.
MKM Balourina × Ermitage Kalone
In 2027, we're breeding our first homebred mare, MKM Balourina, to the international jumping stallion Ermitage Kalone, with a foal expected in 2028. It's a pairing we've thought about for a long time — one built on soundness, scope, and a pedigree we believe will produce a serious hunter/jumper prospect.
MKM Balourina
Balourina is the horse that started it all for us — the first foal we bred and raised ourselves, start to finish. She's grown into everything we hoped for: correct, careful, and built with the scope and hind-end power we look for in a jumper prospect.
- Sire:
- Balounito (Westfalen) — by Balous Bellini
- Dam:
- Fionessa (Canadian Warmblood) — by Fiador
- Bred & owned by:
- MKM Sport Horses, Alberta
Ermitage Kalone
Ermitage Kalone is one of the most sought-after jumping stallions in Europe right now: Belgian Showjumping Champion in 2023, a member of Belgium's showjumping team at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and winner of the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Paris in 2025 under Gilles Thomas. He passes on scope, carefulness, and rideability — exactly what we want to add into Balourina's produce.
- Sire:
- Catoki (Holsteiner) — GP performer with Philipp Weishaupt
- Dam:
- Bellaventure Kalone (Selle Français) — by Kannan
- Standing at:
- Hengstenhouderij Van Dijck, Belgium
This cross brings together Balourina's Westfalen- and Canadian-Warmblood-influenced jumping lines with Ermitage Kalone's elite Selle Français/Holsteiner performance pedigree — a pairing chosen for scope, technique, and temperament, not convenience. We'll be sharing updates on the pregnancy and, eventually, the foal, right here on this page.
Custom breedings
Beyond our own mares, we occasionally take on custom breeding requests — managing the stallion selection, logistics, and planning for outside owners who want the same level of care we give our own herd.
We'll say it plainly: we're picky. We turn down far more inquiries than we accept. Every breeding we take on, ours or a client's, has to align with the standards we hold our own program to.
- Proven soundness. We won't breed, or advise breeding, a mare or stallion with unresolved conformation or soundness concerns.
- Purpose-built pedigrees. The cross needs a clear reason to exist — bloodlines chosen for a hunter/jumper career, not just what's available.
- Temperament that fits. We look for mares and stallions with the rideable, workable minds our program is built around.
- A plan for the foal. We want to know a young horse bred through us has a thoughtful plan behind it, from foaling through those first few years.
